John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

We need to pray that Ireland will continue to ban abortion.

It is a predominantly Catholic country however, so I doubt you will find abortion on demand being approved whatever the result. The demand for a referendum has been provoked by a case where a woman died of sepsis over several days because a hospital would not remove the dying and infected child she was already miscarrying in case it was deemed they had performed an illegal abortion. Her husband sued for negligence and breach of her right to life, and won. Legal clarification of what "danger to life" means might be a very good idea as the current "Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act 2013" rushed out after these events appears to satisfy neither pro-life or pro-choice.
