1Jn 1:5 God is light

Recommended Posts

God is light

1Jn 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

What does it mean that God is light?

1. The Revelation of Truth

2. Holiness

This metaphor "light" is very commonly used throughout the New Testament and most commonly associated with these two concepts. For example it says,

"the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth"
Eph 5:9

"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?"
2Cor 6:14
And Jesus said, "This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed."
John 3:19,20

Being in light is actually is being in the truth that Jesus Christ is the Messiah and follow him which acquire us righteousness that makes us holy. Therefore light means both truth and holiness at the same time.
