Christforums

.... an orthodox (true and correct when contrasted with Liberal theology) Protestant forum whose members espouse the Apostolic doctrines in the Biblical theologies set forth by Augustine, Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, John Calvin and John Knox etc. We do not "argue" with nor do we solicit the membership of people who espouse secular or cultic ideologies. We believe that our conversations are to be faith building and posts that advance heretical or apostate thinking will be immediately deleted and the poster permanently banned from the forum. This is a Christian community for people to explore the traditional theologies of Classical Protestantism. Those who would challenge the peace and harmony that we enjoy here as fellow believers are directed to another website.

1John 3:10 The Distinguishing Marks

The Distinguishing Marks

1John 3:10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.

The Greek word for "know" here ("phaneros") means to be plainly recognized. This verse is one of many which answers the question as to how we can plainly recognize whether a person in the Christian community has been born of God or whether they are still children of the devil.

The two distinguishing marks here are:

1. Do they do what is right in God's eyes?

2. Do they love fellow Christians?

I know when someone is struggling with issues of doctrine, that is how I distinguish between what is a false teacher and a brother or sister in Christ. If the person is advocating something other than what the bible says, I believe that while they may have good intentions, God is the one who decides how He wants to be worshipped.

What would the time frame on that be?

Should they leave the water nearly fully sanctified, or might some of the fruit of the spirit take a little longer to mature? :)

Issues of lifestyle do not have hard and fast boundary conditions, but nonetheless we have the concept of that which is characteristic of the person. Same with words like "maturity". There is no hard and fast boundary between maturity and immaturity, but nonetheless we do have the concept of what a mature person looks like versus that of an immature person.

John is not speak of "aorist" events, by which I mean point in time events, but rather of lifestyle characteristics, which by the very nature of them cannot be determined over a short period of time (leaving the water, as you say) But it will become evident over time, these characteristics.

Jesus is sowing his seed on the earth

But the weeds are the ones whom the devil gave birth.

Difficult at times to distinguish the two,

Between a false Christian and one who is true.

When they are young they have only roots.

But you shall know them by their fruits.

The weeds will not last, they will be thrown out

Into a furnace in anguish no doubt.

But the righteous will shine just like the Son.

But of these two seeds, you are which one?
