    What is the Occult?

This is like the teachings of "The Secret", I believe they come from the occult. What bothers me is that some teachings of the occult can be woven into the bible, specifically things like ask, believe and receive. I am not positive, but I believe witchcraft has something to do with performing acts while having a strong conviction that you WILL see the desired results. Unfortunately I see this as similar to having Faith in the Lord answering your prayers. Another thing that confuses me is astrology. Not the two line horoscopes in the paper, but the volumes and volumes of information regarding planets and their movement, placement, and it's meaning on earth. I am a person who searches for information and looks for patterns. I have seen that there are patterns and truths in astrology, and it bothers me because I know it is against the Bible. But I have to believe this is God's plan and design, not satan's, so again I am confused.

    I Don't Know Who I'm Married To!

The word narcissist came to my mind too. Wow, that would be very hard to deal with. Have you confronted her with her lies? Does she react apologetically or aggressively? Does she defend her lies or admit to being caught? Just my opinion, but when you are raising young children, everything seems to change between you and your spouse. There are other personalities and lives in the mix, and suddenly it is not just about the two of you relating, but the family relating as a team. When one person is really straightforward, logical, and emotionally controlled, it can be harder to suddenly see another person's weaknesses in comparison to what the other wants to teach and model to their children. I haven't passed through the young child phase so I'm not sure yet how it all works out. But I have a feeling the relationship dynamics will change once again after the children get older. I would give it time, many people get divorced right when they have young kids and start seeing their spouse differently. I would wait. Realize that life changes, nothing stays the same. Views change. See it as a journey you are both on together, and you are currently at a rough patch. See what you can do to visualize how you would get past this rough patch together, and what it would ideally be like on the other side. Then see if you can implement whatever that would be.

What are your thoughts on tattoos? I have noticed in recent years there is a growing trend to tattoo entire arms, legs, neck, etc. It's different than the one or two hidden tattoos of the past. Nowadays it seems to be very blatant and something to be showed off. Is there a Christian view on this, or something the bible would teach?
  4. What drive me nuts about this whole Pope argument is that there are plenty of other denominations which take the word of their preacher, minister, or elder as a voice of authority to be submitted to and obeyed. These are random people who got into a position of power in their small congregation and there are no checks and balance to be sure this person even knows what they are talking about, or if they are even in a position to talk. At least with the Pope, he is a public, international figure, his words are heard by millions, he can be criticized and his views and behavior can be openly debated by others. This is in contrast to what goes on in the privacy of countless other denominations' churches.
  5. I grew up mainly around Catholics and never really encountered any other denominations. I always had a respect and deep interest in all other religions I encountered, and have always been interested in learning about them. But the first time I officially thought a religion was weird was when as an adult I worked with a Jehovah's Witness.

    Christians and athiests

@cluckeyo are they really atheists or are they maybe agnostic? Or have they just not given matters of spirituality much thought? Just my opinion but I feel that atheism is growing into a sort of religion of it's own these days. There are many intellectual, educated, scientific minded individuals who ascribe to the "proofs" of Richard Dawkins, for example. Some of these people can seem a little angry, as they might have a view like "my life wouldn't suck this way or that if there were a God", or prideful as "my hard work has gotten me where I am, not God", etc. So these types may stand out a bit and color all atheists. But then there are others who just don't give these matters much thought. Additionally I would say some Buddhists can be described as atheists, and they are a very peaceful and loving religion. So it's really hard to make a blanket statement. Either way we should show love to our neighbor and pray for them.

The woman clothed with the sun

Off topic but also interesting to me, is that Jesus judges the Churches. This just makes me think of all the different denominations. Jesus judges each church individually, not against each other. Also what stood out to me, is the words: "I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first." That just stands out to me. There are lots of denominations and each one is thinking they are doing right, and Jesus judges all of them, for what they are doing right by him, and where they are not. Sorry, off topic.

The woman clothed with the sun

Ok I have read the whole revelation 1 to 22. I'll preface this with - I am not studied in the Bible, history, Christian theology, etc, at all. But this is my interpretation: This is a revelation. Like a prophesy of what is going to occur in the future. John says he is taken in Spirit, and sees all these things that he describes to us. So I believe, these things are all literal on the spiritual plane, as he is describing them. How they play out on the material plane can be of debate, but I believe everything to be literal descriptions of what will be occurring (or possibly is already occurring) in the spiritual world. "A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head." This is happening in Heaven, in the spiritual world (where Jesus currently resides). All of this is happening in spirit. "She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth.... The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter. And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne." It is clear the child is Jesus, and that the description is of the mother, who he is birthed from. So, while to say she is Mary, who already lived and died, might feel like a stretch, what is clear (to me) is that we are talking about a female, a woman, who is the MOTHER of Jesus. So while it feels odd to call her Mary (a dead woman with human attributes) it does not feel odd to call her the spiritual Mother of Jesus. It is also clear (to me) that satan hates this woman, the mother, and "pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child" and "was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus." Also clear to me is that this woman is protected by God, and taken care of. "The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days." So, all this points out to me that we are talking about the spiritual Mother of God. As on the earth plane he already had a mother, Mary, I don't see how he can have a second different mother. So to me, I feel we are talking about the Spirit of his Mother.
  9. I'm really not sure where to post this, but I'd like to discuss the doctrine of predestination. If I understand correctly, it is the belief (backed by some scripture) that God chooses who is saved or not. Do you believe this to be true? If so, how does this play out in regards to praying for other people and their salvation? Do your prayers have any effect, or is their fate already decided by God?

The woman clothed with the sun

That sounds pretty logical to me too. While I can not make clear sense of the story, whether it is symbolic or a spiritual occurrence, to me the main players here seem to be Jesus, satan, and Mary.

The woman clothed with the sun

Well, as this is all open to interpretation, my thoughts are that satan also hates Mary. And he certainly wants to make war on her offspring, and those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. This might be one of the reasons Catholics say that praying the rosary is the scourge of the devil. The revelations are clearly not literal descriptions of our everyday material plane existence, so it's hard to make simple relations between the two. Those revelations seem pretty esoteric, and I'm not certain what they are referring to. But what is clear is that they are talking about Jesus, and his mother, which happens to be Mary.

    Is Baptism Necessary for Salvation?

Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:38-39) My thoughts here, are that Peter tells them to be water baptized, and then says you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. But he doesn't say when. Yes, you are water baptized, and yes you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, but it doesn't exactly say that they are one in the same. This is why I believe in infant baptism, because I believe it brings children into the family of Christ, so that they will receive the promise of the Holy Spirit at some point in their life. "for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” (Acts 1:5) This shows to me water baptism is different from baptism with the Holy Spirit.

More care to live and serve

That is exactly my point. Just because healthcare or garbage service falls under the umbrella of "socialist", people who want it are slandered as socialists - when true socialism involves a whole pot of other crap nobody was talking about instituting. And while Americans might think they are true capitalists, they are not, because they still ascribe to the idea of public school, social security, medicare, etc. Whether anyone believes it or not we live in what's called a "mixed economy" - where a country attempts to institute what it feels are the best parts of capitalism AND socialism. So to label democrats as socialists is completely unfair.

    Dreams and premonitions.

@Corzhens wow it really does sound like you have had some premonitory dreams. Acts 2:17 "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams." I have had only a few experiences that stand apart. I don't know that they were any sort of premonition or God speaking to me, but they seem to have come from outside of me, as the information in them was foreign to me. Once at a time I was very sick and taking a lot of different medications, I had a dream of glistening, shiny black pebble like things. They stood out, the color was so vivid, they were so prominent, and something I never encountered before. When I woke up I couldn't stop thinking about them and started googling it. I right away came up with "activated charcoal", which is something you can take to soak up poisons or medications in your system. I thought it was so strange because I really was on a lot of different things (when I usually never take any medicines) and wondering about side effects making me feel even worse. I went to the health food store that day, bought and took the charcoal, and I felt a million times better the next morning. It was a strange occurrence I'll always remember.

    Childless Marriage

I hear what you are saying. But I feel just the fact that you have thought, reflected, and verbalized that - well, I think you would make a wonderful parent.
