Whats the significance of the launching of the MOAB

Recommended Posts

Trump has expressed in glowing terms that the launching of the Mother of ALL Bombs (MOAB) was a strike against ISIS. But was there anything of great significance that was derived from the strike? All that we are hearing that underground tunnels were destroyed and a small number of the enemies were killed. This strike seems to be a one-off deployment of that type of missile. Do you think ISIS will be too perturbed because of this strike which seems to just expand a huge amount of resources to achieve a very low level of results?

If no other message was sent: we are now listening to our military officers on the ground which request such heavy support in order to aid them in combat, minimize our casualties, and effectively decimate the opposing force. Obama would ignore officers on the ground which determined the best military option, but rather was more concerned about his political career, I think the current administration is actually focused on winning the war. We've seen this in the past when politicians in Vietnam dragged out a war because they were not focused on winning, but rather making a political move in order to satisfy their critics.

All that we are hearing that underground tunnels were destroyed and a small number of the enemies were killed. This strike seems to be a one-off deployment of that type of missile.

The MOAB is not launched, it is not a missile. It is the mother of all non-nuclear bombs in the United States arsenal dropped by an airplane. The United States seemingly just made a statement that it is willing to exhaust all funding necessary to support our troops - the MOAB costs around 16 million dollars. With the dropping of the bomb the message sent is the life of our soldiers are worth the financial cost of a bomb. It is better to drop a bomb in a hot area rather than send in soldiers. Not to mention the bomb killed three dozen enemy soldiers. In contrast, during Vietnam, in the wisdom of our politicians soldiers were required to use tracer bullets which saved money but gave away their position. What kind of message was that?

We've seen this kind of war before. In Vietnam and even in Japan the enemy would dig themselves in or drop below the surfaces during air raids. After the raids the enemy would resurface. This bomb is one of several that is designed to combat that. If you think this bomb is "bad" wait until you see other types of incendiary ordinances. They literally burn hotter and are meant to suck the air out of tunnels, collapsing them, and also terminating any life in the tunnels by way of concussions when they go off at their entrances.

When the guys on the ground say we need this here, it should be given them. Throughout the last 8 years of Obama's administration, whenever the guys on the ground said we need this here, the Obama administration would ask, what are the political implications if we do that? Our enemies are expected to criticize our every move, but we are not fighting to win popular opinion.

No, I do not think ISIS acts rationally. Rational discourse is not something that can be pursued with ISIS any longer. The bomb was not only a message to our enemies but also to our allied forces. The narrative will no longer be we lead from behind with a mentality that the U.S. expects others to lead the world. There is now a shift of power that many are no longer happy about, the U.S. is transitioning back to world leadership.

If anything else can be said, for the last eight years during Obama's administration the other countries did not step up and do what is right in the face of the adversary. Our enemies took the opportunity when the U.S. went on vacation to build up their forces, regroup, and advance across the world. We can't expect followers to lead.

God bless,

William

I believe that the US used the opportunity to test the bomb's effectiveness. The bomb was dropped, some structures destroyed and a number of insurgents killed. This will not really put a dent in ISIS's quest for spreading terrorism.I believe that the US is currently studying the effects of the MOAB to see where there may be any improvement to its capabilities.

Just a small point of interest, the MOAB is a fuel-air bomb that functions by consuming all of the oxygen in the vicinity to generate the explosion (suffocating enemy hiding even in caves) andcreating [EDIT: creates] a giant pressure wave that will follow the path of least resistance deep into cave complexes to rupture eardrims and cause other concussion related injuries. It was a special weapon created for special applications ... this just happened to be a good place to test it out.

[Edit: correct misinformation about fuel-air mixture ... the GBU 43/B MOAB uses conventional high explosives, so it is primarilly a concussion weapon.]
