  • Flashback clip of Ayn Rand boldly calling Arabs ‘savages’

With President Obama’s stance toward Israel leaving many Americans scratching their heads, an old video clip of Ayn Rand ripping Arabs has surfaced to suggest things aren’t much different today than under the Carter administration. In a 1979 interview, the author and philosopher called Arabs “savages” when a woman in the audience asked about the Middle East, prompting liberal host Phil Donahue to come to their defense.

In responding, Rand criticized U.S. foreign policy, saying no one knows what’s happening in the Middle East — sound familiar? — before decidedly siding with Israel.

“If you mean whose side should one be on, Israel or the Arabs, I would certainly say Israel,” she told the audience member. “Because it’s the advanced, technological, civilized country amidst a group of almost totally primitive savages who have not changed for years, and who are racist, and who resent Israel because it brings the industry and intelligence and modern technology into their stagnation.”

Donahue responded by turning the tables, offering a passionate defense of Arabs while attacking Rand for her characterization of them. Describing her remark as a “slap at them,” he suggested that Rand did not “accept any criticism, unless you level it.”

“No,” she replied calmly. “I don’t resort to terrorism. I don’t go around murdering my opponents — innocent women and children. That is what I have against the Arabs.”

The exchange was reminiscent of the knee-jerk reaction often seen today by the Obama administration and their media allies when talking about Israel and the Middle East.
