  • Ben Carson: Being Gay is Absolutely a Choice

Potential presidential candidate and famous neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson said in a recent interview that homosexuality is “absolutely” a choice.

According to The Blaze, Carson said that prisons are proof that homosexuality is a choice “because a lot of people who go into prison, go into prison straight — and when they come out, they’re gay.”

Carson continued, “So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.”

Carson apologized for his comments after CNN aired the interview and said he would no longer address gay rights for the duration of his presidential run.

Apologizing to those he may have offended, Carson said, "realized that my choice of language does not reflect fully my heart on gay issues."

"I do not pretend to know how every individual came to their sexual orientation. I regret that my words to express that concept were hurtful and divisive. For that I apologize unreservedly to all that were offended.”

The Republican leader told Sean Hannity that his opinion favoring traditional marriage has not changed, however.

"We have something that's worked just fine for thousands of years to create a nurturing environment for raising children, and I think that's where we ought to leave it," Carson said.

There are lots of gay people who have never been in prison and who have never been straight. They have a choice as to whether or not they will engage in same sex activities but for them being gay is a condition they are born with and not something they have chosen. There are gay people who believe the Bible and choose to follow it rather than to practice gay sex. Here are some sites where you can learn more about them: Spiritualfriendship.org, truefreedomtrust.co.uk, and strengthinweakness.org.

Theologically, I believe both yours and Ben Carson's statements are correct concerning Original Sin and Total Depravity. However, as a medical statement I believe Carson is suggesting there is no medical evidence genetic or otherwise of a person being born "homosexual." One, I would think, may have to provide evidence to the contrary for the MD Brain Surgeon to take a different position, rather than parroting the homosexual narrative.

There might not be any medical evidence that shows that a person is born gay but it is a fact that there are such people. In the book section I just posted a description of a book called Washed and Waiting, by Wesley Hill. Hill grew up in a Christian home and was taught to believe the Bible. However all his life he has experienced sexual attraction toward other men. Because he is a Christian he has chosen not to act on that attraction but to live a life of celibacy but it is clear that he was born gay.

Have you visited any of the sites I mentioned in my post? They show that Hill isn't alone.

There is a Biblical explanation for why some people are born gay. One of the effects of sin is that many people are born with physical defects. Perhaps being attracted to others of the same sex is a result of such a defect. No one has found a gene that causes people to be gay. Perhaps they are looking in the wrong place. They should be looking for defects in the genes that make us straight.

          Hello Theo,

No, I haven't looked at the links you provided in your post. I realize Hill more than likely isn't a loner. I must say that I find those sites as interesting as a site promoting an NDE. If the purpose for the sites you have provided are to spread compassion and empathy for homosexuals, and in explaining Biblically sound theology through experience than I suggest Proverbs 3.5; 16.4 - God has decreed the act of the sin; but not the sin of the act.

Before I write this, I want you to know that I have no hatred towards the subject matter, and write not sneering or sarcastically. Lemme just share my thoughts, and even go into my own personal struggles. I'd like you to keep in mind that Biblically, Pornia is often a word used in the Bible to describe any sexual immoral behavior, affecting heterosexuals as well as homosexuals in not only action but also in thought life.

You shared, Theo, that they should be searching in the right place for a homosexual gene, maybe it is in the invisible room next to the soul? Perhaps next to the soul they'll find Original Sin and next to it the Regenerational Gene that counters its affects? I think your initial argument parallels an Alcoholic Christian rather nicely. The first time an individual receives a taste of alcohol and quickly identifies as having a natural inclination towards its effects and chooses to identify themselves as an alcoholic. Searching for a gene to excuse the indulgence of alcohol he may be lucky to stumble upon Science and medication that makes one sick whenever he partakes of it. Having said that, in thought life, perhaps a homosexual would be lucky for a gay gene discovery so similar effects could be medically prescribed? Although, the conscience has a wonderful way of having the same effect. As far as compassion and empathy for those resisting sin or struggling against it, I am no callous man. But I tread carefully, I am in wonder of the process which has taken our nation and swayed popular opinion. I find it incredible, that is, the steps leading to the moral decay of a society. Perhaps it started with compassion and empathy for not only sinners, but sin itself? Then, Acceptance and Tolerance which led to Justifying an existence and a right to exist coequal in what appears to be an accomplishment for any apologist defending dualism. With the majority leaning towards homosexual rights, the measuring stick soon shifts, and normal becomes based upon the majority of social behavior as if society itself is the dictator over morality. Our nation has gone from flat out rejecting homosexuality to addressing it as a mental illness. From there the mental illness has been rejected in favor of a perfectly happy normal individual whose only symptom is social prejudice and bigotry. Surely, this line of thinking will promote longer life in the lifestyle of a homosexual. Medicines can be used before homosexual encounters in order to greatly prevent AIDS (so much for making one sick?), and without persecution less will be driven to depression and suicide. Society has embraced first the sinner and then the sin, and spoken from on high as if God Himself has changed His views on these moral matters.

In short, you'll have to excuse me from participating/engaging in those types of sites. If it is compassion and empathy one wishes I keep a box of tissues nearby. I am Bi-Polar, and that has been detected down to the Chromosomes. I do not identify myself as being a Bi-Polar/Christian, which at times leads me from a "natural inclination" to sin. I do not want people to identify and sympathize with me during manic episodes. I do not want people telling me to indulge myself in sexual appetites during these elevated mood swings, or commending me on courage because I choose to either act upon them or make public my struggle against it. This, in my view would be from identifying myself as Bi-Polar rather than Christian. Perhaps, I am fortunate because a medication has been in practice that helps stabilize "normal moods" and helps in suppressing the ill symptoms. If a gene is discovered for homosexual behavior and results in the same possibilities concerning medicine, do you suppose most Homosexuals will find it a viable solution or a threat? Given the arguments and redefinition concerning such things as love or even marriage, do you suppose a homosexual will "happily" take the magic pill ending his/her life as quickly as a morning after?

Curious more about your perspective/and personal thoughts on these matters, more than those on another site provided by your links, Theo.

          God bless,
          William

Right out of the box I will deny there is ANY EVIDENCE that people are ''born gay'' .. and certainly not from lack of people trying to create that link. People murder, commit adultery and commit all sorts of sin .. and it is their ''choice'' to do so. Homosexuality is no different .. it is a choice that males or females make (as to who their sexual partner) will be. I've heard it said, ''Who would WANT to be gay?" From what I read and see .. ''Coming out of the Closet'' makes that person
a hero (he/she is so brave .. so say the pundits and media) and gives them the attention they desire. In this secular society .. it's COOL to be homosexual.

Do not forget the rest of the letters that go along with this .. they are JUST as brave and cool .. the LBT and ?.
Yes .. the ? mark is for those who haven't decided ''who'' they are yet .. they have not chosen their gender and it's up for debate. If they are not sure, they can look past their waist to see what gender God made them.
God is not confused .. the confusion is ''in their LGBT(?) heads.''

Ben Carson got caught off guard .. but regardless, I do not agree with his assessment. I will put him aside.

God made Man and Woman .. nothing else. He did not create LGBT(?). That man wants to 'lie with man' is against God's commandment:

Leviticus 18: 22 (ESV) You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.

Since God does not TEMPT us to sin .. or .. CAUSE us to sin, we are making the CHOICE to sin. Homosexuality is the ONLY sin that people beat the drum for .. march for .. wave their placards for!

How is it .. that homosexuality is the ONLY sin whose practitioners desperately try to make the practice of it God's fault by stating ''they were born this way.'' People commit all sorts of sin .. can the murderer say, "I was born this way?''

I defy anyone to pick out a sin .. then try to pass that sin off as ''God's fault'' .. yet homosexuals expect to ''get some traction'' by doing so. They will not stand up and say, ''This is what I CHOOSE'' .. therefore, their need to blame God.

It's all nonsense and the world KNOWS it's nonsense .. problem is political correctness. If one does not agree with pagan and liberal thought .. they are ostracized and punished. Homosexuals need the Gospel to be told to them .. they need to be told that they can see salvation with repentance and prayer. They need to know that there is only one way .. and that way .. is Jesus! What they do not need is ''Ignorance on Parade'' .. people who believe that God loves the sinner who refuses to give up his sin; that's why there is not only a Heaven ; but also a Hell.

The word "homosexuality" has two meanings. It can mean the condition of sexual attraction between members of the same sex or it can mean sexual acts between members of the same sex. Many people, including those who have posted in this thread, use the two terms interchangeably. They are completely different and any discussion of the subject which fails to recognize this difference will only end in confusion instead of understanding.

Homosexual activity is a sin and it is something those who practice it choose to do.

The OP of this thread is about the condition of being gay, of experiencing same sex attraction. Many people are born with this kind of attraction. A homosexual can't help experiencing this attraction any more than a heterosexual can help being attracted to the opposite sex. Both homosexuals and heterosexuals are tempted to sin, although in different ways, but they don't actually commit sin unless they yield to the temptations.

People murder, commit adultery and commit all sorts of sin .. and it is their ''choice'' to do so. Homosexuality is no different .. it is a choice that males or females make (as to who their sexual partner) will be.
The act of homosexuality is a choice, just like the decision to commit murder or any other crime, but the condition of being a homosexual isn't, anymore than the condition of being a heterosexual isn't. We can't choose whether we are straight or gay, but we can choose whether or not we will obey God's commands regarding sexuality.

Those Christians who ''march for'' Homosexuality .. which part of that word are they marching for? For the Attraction part .. or the Acts part? Why are they marching .. why are they boldly parading and cheering behind a rainbow flag? Why are they so afraid to ''stand for God's word'' .. and not afraid to ''spit in God's eye?''

There is no such thing as a homosexual Christian .. one is Christian .. or .. one is not. Those two words (homosexual Christian) are incompatible. If a person has the attraction to a person of the same sex .. but do not engage in the act, then they are no different from other Christians who are God's people in trying not to be sinful .. being tempted (yes), but ''not going there.''

Let's not kid ourselves, those who take up the flag for homosexuality .. are not marching for the ''attraction'' part of it .. it only takes the viewing of one 'Gay Parade' to understand the ramifications of what is going on. It is not about people being attracted to one another; it's ALL about sex. It is not the innocent 'happening' that proponents wish it to appear to be.

I will not ''split hairs'' .. homosexuality is an abomination. I will not try to parse (and dilute) the word till it becomes a non entity. It is not a coincidence that they have exchanged the word Homosexual and replaced it with Gay; as if it's just another lifestyle approved of by society.

It is GOD who made it a Sin .. It is Pagans who practice in willful Disobedience .. It is Heretics who give the pagans their Support!

I have opened this thread to go beyond what Dr Ben Carson has stated as to why people become homosexual .. with good reason; unless ANY of us are in the scientific field .. have studied their DNA or brain waves ..it's all CONJECTURE!

Your perspective is a rather interesting one Theo. I believe you're correct in some ways, but in error in others. I think, you're defending correct interpretation of a passage concerning heterosexuals and applying it to homosexuality, resulting in a misapplication.

                  Matthew 5:27-28 says,

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart."
I will try to show, Theo, that this passage deals with a desire of something unlawful and apply it to the unnatural. To covet is to long after another's property to enjoy it as one's own. It is indulging in thoughts that lead to actions named in the other commandments. Grasping thoughts lead to grasping deeds.

Coveting normally arises from two sources. First, it begins with a perception of beauty; we desire to possess a thing because it looks good to us. Second, it comes from an inclination for something more abstract, like a desire for power. The first almost always arises externally because the attraction comes through the senses. The second generally arises internally through dwelling upon how the abstract possession will better the self. Both are equally bad.

One misconception that should immediately be eliminated is that “lust” (ἐπιθυμία) is a specifically sexual term. In fact, the word simply refers to a strong, passionate desire, used either of sexual desire or of a strong desire for something non-sexual.

So it is the reflecting purpose: “anyone who looks at a woman in order to covet her.” (“Covet” is preferable here in part because “covet” better reflects the intentionality reflected in the passage.) This is a critically important point; Jesus is not suggesting that any sexual thought or inclination towards a woman is sinful. Nor is he suggesting that such thoughts or attractions being triggered by a look are sinful. The look is not the problem (nor is the presence of a beautiful woman, which some of that day tended to blame as the real problem); no, these are assumed. What is remarkable is that Jesus likewise assumes the presence of sexual desire in the man as a given, and that sexual desire isn’t seen as the problem. Instead, Jesus addresses the matter of intent, of volition, the purpose of the look. The issue is not the appetite itself but how a man directs this natural appetite and inclination which applies to heterosexuals in this context.

However, if understood correctly the attraction which is not condemned in this passage between a man and woman falls short in exchanging God for our most cherished idol. We are prone to fall in love with - the "self" whether we entertain the idea or act upon it. Same sex whether attraction or action is a dysfunctional form of idolatry, whether thought or deed it's ultimately an expression of self worship and described as a "debased mind" - Romans 1:24-29:

24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness.
                  God bless,
                  William

In my first post I mentioned a book called Washed and Waiting. The author, Wesley Hill, has been sexually attracted to other men all his life and has felt no such attraction for woman. He is a homosexual. He has also put his faith in Jesus Christ, so he is a Christian. He is a homosexual Christian. The term "homosexual Christian" is no more contradictory than "heterosexual Christian."

Almost all people are homosexuals or heterosexuals; they are sexually attracted either to the opposite sex or to the same sex. (I used the word "almost" because the are some who are bisexual, attracted to either sex.) Some in both groups choose to obey God and others choose to disobey. Some in both groups believe in Christ and some refuse to believe. There are heterosexual and homosexual Christians just as there are heterosexual and homosexual nonChristians.

Our society has rejected God's moral standards and believes that homosexuals should be free to act on their desires. Christians oppose the popular standards of morality and try to persuade people to obey God. Many of the Christians who do this are homosexuals. The popular news media ignore the existence of these people and claim to be acting on behalf of all homosexuals. It is to be expected that they would do this but unfortunately some Christians do the same thing and just assume that all homosexuals are opposed to us.

In a former post I listed some sites that are run by people who are homosexuals and who also advocate the Bible's standards of morality. If you visit those sites I think you will understand that it is possible to be a homosexual Christian.
