  • Christforums International Targeting

    Now that we have been online for a little over two years I have noticed something rather strange from prior behavior of forums I have designed. Most of our traffic comes from the United States, and we seemingly lack traffic in other English speaking regions. For example, we want to target not only U.S. English speakers, but also French English speakers, and those from Great Britain and Australia etc.

    The first mistake in this forums' configuration setup was located in Google's webmaster tools. In international targeting we were only targeting the U.S. Now we are set up to target a global English speaking geographic. The first changes were made in Webmaster Tools:

    Set a country target
    1. On the International Targeting report, click the Country tab.
    2. Check the Geographic target checkbox and choose your country target. If you want to ensure that your site is not associated with any country or region, select Unlisted in the drop-down list.

    Second, I went into Vbulletin's code and didn't see any use of the hreflang tags. Here's what I added to the header_css file:

    Code:
    <link rel="alternate" href="https://www.christforums.org" hreflang="en">
    <link rel="alternate" href="https://www.christforums.org" hreflang="x-default" />
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en">
    I'm not positive whether the language specification was even necessary, after spending some time searching online I came up rather empty. I'm certain this will take some time for Google to notice and to implement if this is a step in the right direction.

    God bless,
    William
