          5) Five Vigils
          5a) The Jews’ Plans Genesis 50:25,26; 45:5,7

          Leviticus 23:32
Ye shall afflict your souls ... from even unto even (‘ereb’) shall ye celebrate your sabbaths. From after vespers until after vespers shall ye celebrate your sabbaths.
Kai tapeinohsete tas psuchas humohn apo hesperas heohs hesperas sabbatieite ta sabbata humohn.
          Matthew 27:57
          When EVEN was come ...
          Opsias de genomenehs . . .
          Mark 15:42
And now having been evening already
          Kai ehdeh opsias genomenehs

since it had become The Preparation which is the Fore-Sabbath . . . .
epei ehn paraskeueh ho estin prosabbaton . . .
          John 19:31
the Jews then asked Pilate since it had become the Preparation
hoi oun Ioudaiohn ehrohtehsan ton Pilahton epei Paraskeueh ehn

that their legs might be broken

so that the bodies on the crosses

would not hang on the sabbath but could be taken away
          meh meinehi en tohi sabbatohi

because that day was great day sabbath,
ehn gar megaleh heh hehmera ekeinou tou sabbatou,
          32
Then came the soldiers and brake the legs of the first
Ehlthon oun hoi stratiohtai kai tou men prohtou kateaksan ta skeleh

and of the other which was crucified with him.
kai tou allou tou sustaurohthentos autohi.
          33
But when they came to Jesus
          Epi de ton Iehsoun elthontes,

and saw that he was dead already

they brake not his legs, but
ou kateaksan autou ta skeleh, alla’
          34
one of the soldiers with a lance pierced his side.
heis tohn stratiohtohn lonchehi autou tehn pleuran enuksen.

And came there out forthwith blood and water.
Kai eksehlthen euthus haima kai hudohr.

          35
          (Joseph) who saw, witnessed,
          Kai ho heohrakohs memarturehken,

          and his witness is true—
kai alehthineh autou estin heh marturia—

the same knows, that he speaks truth,
Kai ekeinos oiden hoti alehtheh legei,

so that you as well shall believe.
          hina kai humeis pisteuehte.
          36
For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled:
Egeneto gar tauta hina heh Grapheh plehrohtehi:. . .

A bone of him shall not be broken.
          Hostoun ou suntribehsetai autou.
          37
          And again, another Scripture says,
          Kai palin hetera Grapheh legei:

They shall look on Him whom they pierced.
          Opsontai eis hon eksekentehsen.
