  • 2 Thessalonians 1 Supports Amillennialism

2 Thessalonians 1 provides support for amillennialism because the chapter is in tension with all the other major millennial views. We shall consider separately how it is in tension with pre and midtribulational premillennialism, posttribulational premillennialism, and postmillennialism. As one might expect, none of the global issues connected to 2 Thessalonians 1 is new to the millennial debate. But new angles appear as we consider how the global issues interface with a careful reading o f 2 Thessalonians 1 in the context o f first century Thessalonica.

It describes the second coming of Christ, which reads quite differently from 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 yet ties in with the fact Paul is writing to a troubled people. Where did the saints with Christ come from? The rapture. What are these verses talking about? The second coming after the tribulation. In the rapture time, it is too soon to talk about Jesus taking fiery vengeance which sounds as though it is nearly immediate in 2 Thess. 1. There is comfort in the words of 1 Thess. 4.

"7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; 10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day."
